Seriously for the “Serious Games” or where Science meets Art

On invitation by the “NBU” “Center for Risks and Security Studies, department at New Bulgarian University, the Chairman of BULSIM Mr. Nikolay Tomov presented a public lecture titled “Seriously for the “Serious Games” or where Science meets Art”. Students from educational programmes “Civil and Corporative Security”, “National and International Security” and “Computer Technologies in Defense and Security” attended at the seminar.

The accent of the presentation emphasized the significance of the becoming popular domain of the “Serious Games”, regarding the skills and competence growth of the human resources in all public and industrial sectors. The importance of the computer assisted exercises (CAX) for training, analyses and decision making in crises management was argued with real CAX examples. Brief survey of the evolution of “modeling” and “simulation” terms was done and the benefits of application of M&S tools and techniques as an original approach to “pre-live” the future were outlined. It was demonstrated how incompatible at first sight notions as “seriousness” – “entertainment” and “science” – “art” find their intersection point in the “Serious Games” and in the process of “Gamification”.The “NBU” Center for Risks and Security Studies at NBU was established as an applied-scientific and research section in 2003.

The foundations of higher education in “Defense and Security” domain were laid in New Bulgarian University with the Center’s institutionalization.
